It’s touted by organizers as “the most colourful event in North America,” and you need watch it for only a minute to know that’s not hyperbole.
The annual cultural festival and powwow on the Wiikwemkoong First Nation reserve on Manitoulin Island is truly a sight to behold. Indigenous people come from all over the continent during the August holiday weekend to sell their wares and gather in fellowship.
Wiikwemkoong is unceded territory, meaning it is not bound by any treaty with Canada. It’s the fifth-largest reserve by area in the country.
